The latest round of South Africa Travel Covid Restrictions, COVID mutation, lockdowns, restrictions, and banning of international flights to South Africa is a financial disaster. This article is not about why, who etc but a simple observation.

If you are in the Tourism space in Southern Africa and are perpetually waiting for international tourists with fat wallets full of strong foreign currencies, I suggest that you re-evaluate your marketing strategy.

If you as a South African were planning a trip to Thailand for example and the following information and the Thailand local” historical rulings is available would you make a booking?
1. The potential loss of many thousands of Rands if flights were banned overnight.
2. Claiming compensation from insurance is almost nonexistent and/or expensive.
3. 60% of the local population has not been vaccinated
4. Excessive local lockdowns were in place for many months and were subject to change on any given Sunday evening.
5. The areas that you want to visit, ie. Beaches and restaurants have been closed based on “evidence” which is now refuted in this round of restrictions.
6. Interprovincial travel was banned and even export of fresh produce and wines.

I am sure that you can add many other reasons why you would plan an overseas trip and would consider a local one.
1. The currency and languages are the same.
2. No mind-numbing long flights and stopovers in the desert.
3. The possibility of postponing the trip to a later date if required is much higher. The local venue does not want a bad reputation and will try to be accommodating in such situations.
4. Less planning and impulse bookings are an attraction.
